TV Girlfriend
June 29th 2018
The start of this new offering from discrete shirkers TV Girlfriend immediately reminded me of Blur, which may be an odd thing as the main feel, tune and lyrical content is quite ‘un-blur’. The song as a whole is cleverly written, honest with a dark and haunting aura.
The chorus is sublime and beautiful, and I really bought into the singer’s perception of life, getting older and the mental drama which inflicts the head of anyone who may stop too long to think about where they might be heading.
The song certainly leaves you wanting to hear more. Can’t wait for the album.

You Can't Kill - Deadbeat at Dawn
June 28th 2018
Trying out my Trio ka300 Hifi amp and bang and Olufsen 3800 Speakers (both of which are available to buy on this site - had to get that in there), I needed something hard hitting and glorious to listen to. The new Deadbeat at Dawn single gave me this and so much more. Whilst waiting for my free vinyl copy to be sent (we live in hope), the YouTube version had to do. Nevertheless, unaccustomed as I am to skanking and dancing of any form, ‘you can’t kill (what’s already dead)’ had me spinning around my living room like a crazy old South Korean who had just seen their team smash Germany in the World Cup. The track is instantly memorable and after a couple of listens I could not get it out of my head. One of the best choruses I have heard for a while, the beauty lies in its full on impact combined with a poppy simplicity which just works.
The song, as far as I can tell, depicts the comeback story of the band, who have clearly been around for a while and never given up their passion for recording and gigging, despite the cruel setbacks of the dog eat dog music industry. At the same time it could also describe the tale of a poor pheasant which has just been mowed down on a busy B road, a sight which is commonplace on the country roads in North Yorkshire, from where the band hail.
This one is well worth a listen Keep it going lads.
